Propolis [prop-uh-lis] consists mainly of resins exuded from the leaf buds and bark of certain trees, mainly poplar.  The resins are harvested by worker bees who mix these resins with a little wax, honey, and enzymes to make propolis.  The bees use propolis as putty to seal the cracks in the hive and to strengthen and repair honeycombs.  It helps sterilize the hive, inhibiting the spread of bacteria, viruses, and fungi that are a significant threat in such humid, close quarters.  It is commonly found lining the cells in the brood nest and is also used when the bees cap their honey.  Soldiers in the ancient world used propolis and honey on battlefield wounds to aid in healing.  Many weapons of the day were designed to cause wounds that were difficult to suture, and many soldiers survived the battle only to die of infection when propolis and honey weren't readily available.

  • Is used as a topical treatment for minor cuts, sores, and abrasions.
  • In cell culture tests, propolis extracts have been shown to significantly inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria that cause:  diphtheria, pneumonia, boils, strep throat, dysentery, scarlet fever, diarrhea; as well as wound, urinary tract, ear, sinus, throat, and lung infections.
  • Propolis capsules can opened up and mixed with ointments to speed the healing of wounds.  Pets won't enjoy the taste and will resist licking the medicine off.
  • Propolis mouth washes are astringent.  They help the body to heal from oral surgery and prevent halitosis, gingivitis, tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Propolis is anti-fungal and antiviral.  It has shown effectiveness against ringworm, tropical skin and scalp fungal diseases, skin and nail infections.
  • It inhibits growth and replication of viruses in cell cultures.  These include:  polio, herpes, influenza, adeno and roto viruses.
  • Clinically considered to stimulate the growth of new tissue in addition to preventing infection.  Various flavonoids in propolis are known to have tissue-strengthening and regenerative effects.
  • Propolis contains organic acids and their ester and alcohol derivatives.  Many of the organic acids in propolis have long lists of biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-mutagenic, antihistamine, anti-allergenic, and spasmolytic actions, and are found in numerous medicinal and aromatic culinary plants.
  • Propolis tincture has been used as a digestive aid for centuries.
  • Helps prevent cancer viruses and may lessen the effects of chemo and radiation treatment, but not very effective against existing cancers.

Pollen

As the girls visit flowers, the pollen collects on little hairs all over their bodies.  The bees groom themselves and deposit the pollen in special sacs called corbiculae, one on each of their hind legs.  After returning to the hive they will dump this into an empty cell before racing off to get more, usually performing a bee dance before she goes.  The girls in the hive then pack it down in the cell for later use.  Pollen is the only source of protein, starch, fat, vitamins and minerals in a colony's diet.  By weight, pollen has more protein than beef, and is the best food for developing larvae and young adults, and for producing brood food.  We collect pollen from our hives with a pollen trap,  which is a special box with several layers of screen above a drawer.  When the bees enter they pass through a screen which knocks off some of the pollen into the drawer.  It won't take it all because the bees need some to eat themselves.  We only take excess from our hives, keeping the bees well fed and healthy is our first priority.  This is fresh pollen, so keep refrigerated for best results.  Bee Bread is a fermented mixture of honey and pollen, much like the way the bees store it in the hive.

  • Sticky pollens that the bees collect aren't the same as the wind borne variety that commonly cause allergies.  They are, however, similar so consuming bee pollen should help build a resistance to wind borne pollen allergies.
  • Bee pollen contains anywhere from 12% to 30+% protein.  Also contains the complete spectrum of amino acids.  They are the building blocks of proteins, which are needed to build every cell in the body.
  • Pollen contains every vitamin known to science.  It is especially rich in pantothenic acid (B5), nicotinic acid (B3), and riboflavin (B2).  Also contains vitamin C, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, potassium, and manganese.  More than twenty five trace elements account for 2 to 4% of the dry weight of pollen.  Not a significant source for vitamins B12 and D.
  • Pollen is 5 to 10% good fat by dry weight.  This contains considerable essential fatty acids, lecithin, and other nutrients.  They are "essential" because we need them to survive, and the body cannot produce these by themselves.  It is recommended that other sources of EFA's are also used, such as flax oil, hemp seed oil, or Youngevity vitamins.
  • Pollen is rich in phytochemicals, which are a plant's natural immune system, warding off diseases and viruses.  These increase a body's immune system and support the ability to remove toxins.  These substances have also been linked to the prevention of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and other ailments.  People who don't get any benefits from vitamins often are able benefit from pollen because it is a natural food and is absorbed into the body more readily than some brands of vitamins.
  • Fresh, unheated pollen contains numerous active enzymes, co-enzymes, and hormones.  Enzymes are energized protein molecules and are used in every biological process in the body.  Eating enzymes saves the body from the energy depleting process of manufacturing enzymes.
  • Pollen is a complete food source.  Rats and mice fed unlimited pollen and water grew up with heavier brains, and weighed three to four times less than a control group fed standard lab chow.  They were fed this diet for over a year and led healthy lives.
  • One or two teaspoons of pollen is equal to a hearty serving of vegetables.  Start off with a few granules at a time to determine if you have allergies and work your way up to one to three tablespoons a day.
  • Animals consume more bee pollen in the U.S. than humans do.  Your pets can benefit from this supplement that isn't found in most commercially available foods.  Birds, cats, dogs, rabbits, ferrets, and other small mammals love pollen.
  • Detoxifying and healing properties of pollen have been known for years.  It alleviates allergies, fatigue, high cholesterol and triglycerides, infertility, impotence, varicose veins, prostatitis, cancer, and helps recovery from illness and surgery.

Royal Jelly

Royal jelly is the primary food bees produce to develop larvae in the hive.  Nurse bees ingest pollen and nectar, then secrete royal jelly from a gland in their heads.  All larvae are fed this for the first three days of their life, then are cut off.  Only the queen gets to eat royal jelly her whole life which explains her much longer lifespan, larger size, and ability to mate and lay fertilized eggs.  In Chinese and other Asian cultures, royal jelly has long been prized for its ability to prolong life, prevent disease, and return the vitality of youth to the elderly.

  •  Royal jelly is used for:  Anorexia, anxiety, arteriosclerosis, arthritis, bone fractures, bronchial asthma, depression, dermatitis, eczema, fatigue, lack of sexual desire in women, hair loss, impotence, liver disease, pancreatitis, insomnia, kidney disease, seborrhea, stomach ulcers, varicose veins, skin disorders, weakened immune system.
  • Maintains healthy cardiovascular and immune systems.  A unique fatty acid in royal jelly called HDA inhibits blockage and hardening of the arteries, and blood clot damage to the artery walls.
  • Contains all the B vitamins as well as phytosterols, acetylcholine, and hormones, which work together to lower cholesterol and prevent heart disease
  • Roughly 66% water, 15% carbohydrates, 13% protein, 5% fat, and 1% trace elements.  Carbohydrates are mostly fructose and glucose.  Contains all B vitamins (rich in pantothenic acid), has traces of A, C, D, E, & K.  Not normally consumed in quantities greater than 1-2 grams per day.
  • Stimulates the immune system and has antimicrobial properties.
  • Especially good for the skin, protects it from dehydration, irritation, and inflammation.  Softens skin, removes wrinkles, and heals skin in general.

Honey

Honey was used all throughout the ancient world for its healing properties.  Honey has been used to treat sore throats, colds, flu, skin and stomach ulcers, diarrhea, other digestive disorders and for dressing wounds.  Recent research has confirmed the healing properties of honey.  It has been  demonstrated to be a broad spectrum antibiotic, inhibiting the growth of numerous pathogenic bacteria.  Raw honey is best because pasteurization destroys the amino acids and enzymes in honey.  It makes a great sweetener for your tea, but reduces its effectiveness.  Be careful when buying honey from an unknown source.  Some unscrupulous beekeepers feed their bees sugar water and then collect the substance produced from this.  It's not legally honey, and has few of the properties of real honey.  Raw, unpasteurized, local honey is best.

  • Excellent alternative to white sugar and artificial sweeteners.  Bees predigest the sugar in honey, which turns it into simple sugars (fructose and dextrose)  making it much easier to digest.  Contains up to 35% protein and half of all amino acids.  Highly concentrated source of many nutrients including enzymes, minerals, and vitamins such as the B-complex, C, D, and E. Raw honey also contains some pollen and propolis.
  • Darker the color, higher the antioxidant properties (especially buckwheat).
  • Used topically to treat different types of wounds and lingering/chronic skin infections, including skin, leg, foot, varicose, and diabetic ulcers; bedsores, abrasions, burns, surgical incisions, large septic wounds, cracked nipples, wounds to the abdominal walls and perineum, and gangrene.
  • When applied to burns, honey forms a flexible, protective barrier that prevents infection, absorbs pus and reduces pain, irritation and odors.  The enzymes in honey stimulate the growth of new tissue.
  • Take 1-2 teaspoons of honey before each meal to aid in digestion, mitigating the effects of chronic indigestion.  Honey lines the intestinal tract which helps heal ulcers and reduces inflammation.
  • Two tablespoons before bedtime is stored in the liver as glycogen, which the brain looks for in the middle of the night for fuel as it goes about its duties healing the body.
